A bone clattering chuckle floated from the maw of the skull faced Swamp Deity. It was laced with amusement and a hint of bitterness as he considered the recent developments in their world.
The most annoying thing, the stallion found, was the fact that his shadow magic wasn’t working like it should. It was so mundane to travel by hoof, and while he had six instead of the usual four it didn’t mean he went any faster in this damp, vine laden section of the swamp. It took some of the fun out of the job; appearing from the shadows and startling Quirlicorns in his Swamp was definitely a form of amusement for the stallion.
Keir shook his head as he came to a particularly tangled area. It’s not like Keir never walked through the swamp, but really, this dip in the deities' magic was irksome! The great black stallion flicked his reptilian tail, before moving to walk around the large tangle of vines. He would be quite glad when everything was back to normal.
But what if this was the new normal? What if things never went back to how they were? Keir pondered that for a moment before shrugging to himself. Well, if this was the new normal, then he would just have to employ some of his other tricks. Keeping a positive attitude was something he was trying out. Perhaps he could play tricks on swamp travelers that way, being obnoxiously positive and upbeat. After a moment of consideration, Keir discarded the idea for now.
There was mischief to be had. It was a serious situation, yes. But that didn’t mean that the Quirlicorns who answered his summons were immune from the Swamp Deities bag of tricks.
Moving silently, Keir approached the meeting place, and found a good hiding spot among the vines, leaves, and bog water. He had picked a fitting place for the sacrifices… er, volunteers to arrive. It was the remains of a temple of sorts, the once white marble covered with moss and vines, yellowed by time. Where the floor had been was a bit of a mess - part of it had sunk into the marshy ground, and the rest was cracked and a bit unstable. What remained of an altar sat in the middle, strange suspicious stains upon the top. The one remaining brazier was lit, the flames made green by burning certain minerals with it. All in all, an eerie spectacle awaited the helpers of the deities.
The one who arrived first was a violet mare, with a black mane and tail. She seemed by Keir’s standards to be pretty normal, but there was something about her stance that made Keir wonder if she would be a good verbal sparring companion. Sarcasm was an art, after all.
The other one…. Keir felt a moment of joy as the other Quirlicorn arrived. By looks, the other mare was something that spoke to Keir’s love of strange swamp things. And a Plague Quirlicorn to boot!
Oh, this was going to be fun, Keir thought to himself.
The Swamp Deities signature cackle seemed to echo around the two mares, moments before he slunk from the shadows. Not as dramatic as appearing straight between them, but it would have to do.
“You two. Something is up with magic, and there is something unnatural going on in the Swamp. Figure it out,” Keir said, clacking his teeth together to punctuate the statement. “Good luck,” Keir added, although it sounded more like a warning than a true wish for luck.
With no other instruction, he wandered back into the swamp.
